The Perth County Courthouse is one of the most magnificent courthouses in the Province of Ontario.  This courthouse building was completed and opened in 1887.  The building was designed by George F. Durand, Architect, who considered himself as an architect-artist of that time.

The building is an excellent example of High Victorian architecture, situated on a site, sloping northwards to the Avon River in Stratford, ON.  Inside the building, the stonework, brickwork and woodwork are tremendous in appearance. The main open staircase from the main (first) floor to second floor, tall wood doors and windows with wood architrave exemplify the openness and vastness of the building.

Since 1887, the building has existed without any major renovations, except a few interior renovations including the installation of a lift for barrier-free accessibility to the building, and to separate the basement floor from the first floor.  The facility continues to serve as a functioning courthouse for the Superior Court of Justice, Provincial Offenses, Crown Attorney’s offices and the administrative offices of the County of Perth.

The scope of this project is to install a fully-automatic, AODA compliant elevator within the interior or the building while maintaining many of the architecturally significant features.  The County wishes to prequalify contractors for the tendering of the project.
